Biography

Was born in 1845 in Tiflis province, Borchalu, Shulaver village, Georgia.

Work activity

  • Composed in Armenian and Russian , played kemenche and was a maitre of troubadours' guild.
  • Wrote songs, poems, plays, short stories.
  • Wrote articles for "Iveria" and "Kvali" magazines.

  • Was born in the family of Davit Abrahamyan who had migrated from Karabakh. His mother Tamara Kandareli was Georgian, so they spoke both Armenian and Georgian at home.
  • Azir was called "New Sayat-Nova in old Tiflis".
  • Was a very famous troubadour. His works were heard both in celebrations and in funeral ceremonies. Many people began to read books due to his songs.
  • In 1920 was celebrated the 50th anniversary of Azir's creative life in Tiflis. Many writers, poets and famous cultural figures from Armenia and Georgia were present at the reception. Azir said during his speech. "Who am I, the shadow of the past and the ghost of the future."
  • Azir wrote poems, songs and stories in Armenian and Georgian. His first poems were published in 1868. CDs of his songs were also released.
  • He also wrote plays such as "The troubadour", "The habit", "The pickpocket".
  • He was the author of famous "Suliko" song (Lyrics by A. Tsereteli).
  • 1892-1914 Azir's 10 collection of works (Armenian and Georgian) were published in Moscow and Tiflis. They are stored in the Russian National Library.
  • Azir didn't receive enough education but always wanted to study science. He taught a lot to people by his creations. He also did a lot of work for spreading literacy.
  • Unfortunately, Azir did not care enough about his works, which is why some of them have not reached us.
  • He knew his poems by heart. But if he wrote them on papers, he could never read them.
  • Azir's early poems are lyrical. As a young poet, especially in the East, he was singing about feminine beauty, love and suffering.
  • There is a street in Tiflis named after Azir.
  • He is buried in Khojivank Pantheon.
