Biography
Was born on January 7(19), 1825 in Constantinopol, Turkey.
Education
- In 1835 studied at the Mekhitarist Monastery in Vienna.
Work Activity
- In 1887 founded the Armenological journal "Handes Amsorya".
- Taught at the Mekhitarist Colleges of Smyrna and Constantinopol.
Achievements
- In 1842 became a member of the Mekhitarist Congregation of Vienna.
- In 1886 became an abbot.
Other
- Was engaged in scientific activities.
- Developed, enriched and published the book "Grammar of the Armenian Language ..." (1885) by Chalykhian V.
- The work "Examinational Grammar of the New or Contemporary Armenian language" (1866) occupies a significant place in the scientific legacy which played a crucial role in the history of Armenology.
- Perceived the development of the language from the evolutionistic viewpoint.
- The division of the periods of the Armenian language (Old Armenian, Middle Armenian, Modern Armenian) belongs to him.
- Classified the dialects according to the geographical principle.
- Esteemed Old Armenian as a splendid and developed language, but at the same time stressed that the arena should be given to Modern Armenian.
- Wrote the grammar of the Modern Western Armenian language.
