Biography

Was born on March 1, 1941 in Beirut, Lebanon.

Education

  • In 1961 finished the seminary of the Armenian Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia in Antelias.
  • In 1962 studied in Switzerland.
  • In 1963 took a special priesthood training course in the US.
  • In 1970 studied theology at the University of Bridgeon, New Jersey.

Work Activity

  • In 1963 served in Paris.
  • In 1964-1970 lectured in Antelias and Aleppo, was the inspector of the seminary and the director of Beirut National Martikian College.
  • In 1973-1977 held the position of the leader of the Armenian Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia in Isfahan (New Julfa).
  • In 1978-1998 held the position of the leader of the dioceses of eastern states of North America and Canada.
  • Since 1978 issued the English magazine "Outrich".
  • In 1984 became the spiritual counselor of the Knightly Society of Carinthia.
  • Since 1992 was the president of the charitable, social and cultural organizations "Nerses the Great" and "Aram Manukyan".
  • In 1996-2000 was the director of the office in Saint Etchmiadzin for the 1700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity in Armenia.
  • Since 2000 was the founder-director of "Mughni" publishing house.

Achievements

  • In 1963 was ordained an archimandrite.
  • In 1970 got the Master's Degree (for the study and English translation of "The Speech of Rumkale" by Nerses Lambronatsi).
  • In 1970 got the second Master's Degree.
  • In 1977 was ordained a bishop.
  • In 2001 became an honored Doctor of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia.

Other

  • During the 20-year history of Mesrop Ashtshian's rule, 13 churches were consecrated, 4 colleges were opened, more than 60 religious and historical books (Armenian, English) were published.
  • In 1993 the fund of the primacy was created by the efforts of Mesrop Ashtshian.
  • Mesrop Ashtshian is the author of theological, armenological, ethical literary and public-language studies in Armenian and English.
