Biography

Was born in 1884 in the village of Ghaznafar (now Aragats, Aragatsotn province), Armenia.

Work Activity

The main feature of Ashkhuyzh's creative work is the flagellation of violence, arbitrariness, and social injustice ("The World of Violence («Բռնության աշխարհ»), "If It's Good" («Եթե լավ է»), "Unfair Law" («Անարդար օրենք»)). Ashkhuyzh also performed with collective songs through which he praised the work of the rustic. Among the creations of Ashkhuyzh love songs and poems occupy a unique place in which expressed all his thoughts and meditations about pure, ideal love and marriage.

Ա՜խ, էս ծաղիկն ինչ նման է Էն իմ տեսած աղջկան, Որ սրտիս մեջ նոր բոց վառեց, Արևից էլ հուհրան։

Ամեն բացվող նոր առավոտ Իր դեմ ունի մայրամուտ, Բայց այդ շողը իմ սրտի մեջ Չունի գիշեր, չունի մութ։

Երբ նիրհում են շրթունքներս Այդ վառ սիրով միշտ կարոտ, Հոգիս զարթնում, թև է առնում Ու ինձ տանում նրա մոտ։

Sang with violin accompaniment. Is the author of over 2000 songs, many fairy-tales and poems. At the age of four, Khachatur suffered from the "flower" illness and lost eyesight. Found joy in music and melody. Shortly after becoming a skilled minstrel and a storyteller, took the violin to tour the Armenian towns and villages. In 1907, acting at the cafés of Alexandropol (now Gyumri) and expressing an anti-tsar shade in in one of his songs, was arrested. Releasing from custody, the young minstrel kept on touring. When in Echmiadzin in 1908, he had an opportunity to closely get acquainted with the teachers of the Gevorgyan Seminary, one of whom, Levonyan Garegin (Jivani's son), referring to the cheerful and avid character of the young minstrel, gave him the name of Ashkhuyzh (meaning cheerful). Zaryan Nairi said about him: "Being deprived of the light of the sun, he sees the world with all its magical colors and harmonies through the eyes of his soul".
