Biography

Was born on December 9, 1930 in London, the capital of Great Britain.

• In 1948-1952 studied at Harvard University.

• In 1952-1956 worked as a reporter.

Achievements

• National Book Award ( for the book "Passage to Ararat" ) .

• His father is Michael Arlen, mother is Atalanta Mercati, who was an American countess of Greek origin.
• Until 1944 he lived in London, then in the USA.
• In 1973 he visited Armenia with his wife, journalist Alice Arlen. He came to Armenia for the second time in 1989 and visited Artsakh with Louise Simon, Berkruhi Svachian and others. He was connected to the armenian life and considered himself an Armenian writer.
• Armenian topic and memoir play an important role in his works.
• In his work "Passage to Ararat" he discovers his identity and emphasizes his aspiration of returning to his national roots. It has been translated in 22 languages.
