Was born on 15 March, 1904 in Eskisehir, Western Armenia. Died on 28 January, 1988 in Los Angeles, USA.

Education

  • In 1925 graduated from Mkhitaryan college in St. Lazarus, Venice.
  • In 1931-1934 attended armenological courses of K. Basmajyan.

Work activity

  • In 1936-1947, YSU researcher.
  • In 1947-1977, ASSR senior researcher at the Institute of History.
  • In 1979-1988, collaborator of Middle Eastern studies, University of California.
  • Collaborated "Erkunq", "Echmiadzin", "Journal of history and philology", "Bazmavep", "Journal Amsorya", "Simon", "Shoghakat" and other periodicals.

Achievements

  • In 1962, candidate of historical sciences.
  • In 1984, Honorary Doctor of the University of California.
  • Honorary member of Armenian Studies Department named after St. Gregory of Narek, University of California.

  • Father of Henrik Anasyan, grandfather of Armen Anasyan.

  • Author of more than 100 works, mostly dedicated to political situation in medieval Armenia, history, religion, culture, literature, language, and bibliography.
  • He has a significant deposit of studies of the history of Armenian national liberation movements.In "The benefits of a liberal history. Mahtesi Shahmurat and John Tutunji"(1934), "XVII century's Liberation movements in Western Armenia"(1961),"Stepanos V of Salmast"(1981) and other source researches and historical monographs, through his discovered ratifications, he ventilated many unexplored or less explored episodes of Armenian liberation movements, Armenians' difficulties under the possession of Turkey and Persia.
  • Author of significant works such as "Armenian sources about the fall of Byzantium" (1957), "John of Kamen. Khotin war story"(1964), " Vartan Aigektsi under the light of his new works" (1969), " Grigor Shghtayakir's historical record "(1980) and other works.
  • Detected "Book of the acknowledgment and the root of Faith" of Vardan Aygektsi."Roots of Faith" is devoted to the Armenian Church and its religious orders defense against all heretics."Armenian bibliography. E-XVIII centuries" monumental work is one of the Armenian Studies achievments.He scientifically classified the Armenian manuscripts as well.
  • He also compiled the bibliographies of Faustus of Byzantium (1953), Mkhitar Gosh (1954), Yeghishe (1957), Kirakos Gandzaketsi (1961), Constantine Yerzenkatsi (1962), Aristakes Lastivertsi (1963), Sayat Nova (1963) and others' works.His translation of "The original manuscript of the Armenian bible" has a specal significance.
