Work Activity

  • Since 910 participated in the defensive fights of his father Smbat I. Along with his brother Mushegh headed the Armenian army in the battle of Dzknavatshar (910), Nig province, against the amira Yusuf of Atropatene.

Ashot II, who inherited the throne after his father's assassination in 914, liberated Bagrevand, Shirak, Gugark, Aghstev valley from Arabs with his brother Abbas Bagratuni and according to Hovhannes Draskhanakerttsi occupied Tpghis and defeated the Arabian garrison. For the courage and endurance shown in these fights, was nicknamed "Iron". In 915, during the new attack by the Arab troops of Yusuf, Ashot the Iron allied with the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogennetos and received a helping force. For many years, Ashot the Iron fought against the country's external enemies and internal self-centered forces. In 921 with the victory in the battle of Sevan against the Arab troops of Atropatene, Ashot the Iron finally restored the country's independence and unity.

Achievements
