- Since 1020 was the king of Armenia.

- Succeeded his father Gagik I who gave the power to his sons, Hovhannes-Smbat and Ashot IV. In the long fight with his brother for inheriting the throne, Ashot IV was eventually recognized as the King of Armenia in "Druts World" (part of Gugark, Gegharkunik, etc.), with the condition of uniting the country under his rule after his death.
- Maintained peaceful relationships with the Arab Caliphate and Byzantine. As a result of fierce fights against neighboring Muslim Amiras, expanded and strengthened his power.
- Is buried in Ani, in the Bagratunyats royal mausoleum.
