Biography

Was born in the village of Shirakavan (Yerazgavors) or Anania (Aneank) in Shirak province, Armenia.

Education

  • Studied at Dprevank school.
  • Travelled and studied in a number of countries for 11 years.
  • Studied at the school of a remarkable Trabzonian Greek scientist Tyuqikos for 8 years.

  • Was engaged in scientific activity in astronomy, mathematics, journalism, geography and other fields of science, was interested in pedagogy.
  • Opened schools, compiled textbooks.
  • Developed his own philosophical system.
  • In the astronomical works examined issues related to the Sun, the Earth, the Moon, the stars and the cosmic phenomena.
  • Was aware of the Earth's sphericity, the existence of a controversial world, and that the speed of the light spread is much greater than that of the sound.
  • Guessed that the moon itself was a solid body without its own light.
  • Correctly explained the emergence of the Moon's stages, the eclipses of the Sun and the Moon, the tides and refluxes of the seas.
  • Through comparisons and judgments, concluded that the Sun is much greater than both the Moon and the Earth and is at a huge distance.
  • In his works pointed out a number of astronomical practical applications, made timarial calculations and gave certain implications to Armenian and other calendars.
  • His interpretations of Armenian astronomical terms is worthwhile.
  • The most valuable book among mathematical works is the arithmetic textbook, summarizing the four arithmetic operations.
  • The studies of precious stones, dimensions and weight, physics, meteorology are also of scientific interest.
  • The work "Ashkharhatsuyts" is ascribed to him where there are a lot of valuable information about historical Armenia and its neighboring countries.
  • Compiled the Armenian version of the highly advanced "Ten-Class Table" in the field of acoustics, with new ideas about the composition of souns, audios, and vocals.
