Biography

Was born on May 6(19), 1903 in Van, Western Armenia.

Education

  • Has got his primary education in Arark district's parish school of his birthplace.

Work activity

  • In 1918 worked at "Urartu" printing system as a typesetter.
  • In 1921 worked for "Soviet Armenia" daily newspaper as a typesetter.
  • In 1923-1932 was the president in Proletarian Writers Association of Armenia.
  • 1923-1936 was a member of Armenia's and Trans-federation's Central Executive Committees.
  • 1933-1936 was the First Secretary of the Board of Writers Union of Armenia.

  • In 1914 he has repatriated.
  • He has seen the tragedy of the Armenian Genocide, the horrors of the deportation in person, during the migration has lost his parents,somehow has arrived in Yerevan and has found a shelter in the orphanage.
  • Along with his studies, he specialized in typesetting.
  • His first poem called "The red victory" has been published by V. Gabuzyan signature. Later by "Alazan" signature have been published other works by him including poems, stories, reviews.
  • During the first years of his literary activities he has used the nicknames "Hordzanq" and "V. Anoghoq". Later while trying to find a suitable literary nickname he remembered an article that he had read many years ago called in "Alazan lowland" by Gevorg Bashinjaghyan. He liked the name Alazan which became his pen name.
  • Alazan's "Songs for Creation and Victory" and "Struggles" poetry collections are one of the phenomena aimed to the newly developing Soviet literature.
  • In a number of his works he has depicted the life in Siberia during the Great Patriotic War.
  • Following Yeghishe Charet's famous speech (" If you want your voice to be heard become the breath of the time") Alazan responds to the the spirit of the time, the life of the nation, pressing and urgent issues of the day. In his works of different periods Alazan has addressed the most important phenomena of the time like heroic episodes of fighting for freedom, issues for making a new culture, Th Great Patriotic War, postwar peaceful construction.
  • The collection of his poems called "Horizons" has meditative nature.
  • Has been imprisoned without any bases 1937-1954), but later was justified.
