Biography

Was born on June 17 (29), 1817 in Theodosia, Crimea in a poor Armenian family.

Education

  • Studied at Armenian parish school of Theodosia.
  • In 1830-1833 studied at Russian Gymnasium of Simferopol.
  • In 1833-1837 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Petersburg.

Work Activity

  • In 1844 was appointed as a painter at the Marine General Staff in Russia.
  • In 1869 opened the first exhibition in the Armenian reality in Tiflis.
  • In 1880 founded a gallery in Crimea.
  • In 1865 established a school of Fine Arts in Crimea.

Achievements

  • In 1844 became an academician of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts.
  • In 1847 became a professor of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts.
  • In 1857 was awarded the order Legion of Honor in Paris.
  • In 1887 became an honored member of the Russian Academy of Fine Arts.
  • Was a member of the academies of Fine Arts of Rome, Florence, Stuttgart, Amsterdam, the Russian geographic company.

Other

  • By 1843 signed the pictures under the Armenian name Hovh. Haivazovsky, then sometimes Ivan Aivazovsky or Ovannes Aivazian.
  • In 1840 was in Italy (also in St. Lazarus Island), Spain, France, Holand, England, participated in many exhibitions, was awarded a golden medal in Paris.
  • In 1844 returned to Russia.
  • Since 1845 lived in Theodosia.
  • Created a number of martial paints dedicated to the 1853-1856 war of Crimea.
  • Had been in Africa, the USA, the outskirts of Russia, in 1868 in Caucasus.
  • Materially helped the Greeks, Italians during the national-liberation struggle, the pupils of the Academy of Fine Arts, Belarusian students.
  • Helped the Armenian national organizations, dedicated pictures to schools, organized exhibitions.
  • Gave refuge and materially helped the Armenian emigrants escaping to Crimea.
  • Created around 6000 canvases.
  • Created dozens of canvases and portraits in Armenian spirit, portrayed the daily life of Tiflis, Lake Sevan, Ararat.
  • Gave rise and stimulated the development of landscape painting in the Armenian Art.
  • Created works dedicated to the Bible and significant events of the Armenian history.
  • In 1900 set the Aivazovsky scholarship in the Academy of Fine Arts of Saint Petersburg.
