Biography

Was born on march 17,1865 in Astapat(Babek region),Nakhijevan.

Education

  • In 1882 graduated from the Gevorgian Seminary(school diploma) .
  • In 1885 finished audience section at the Gevorgian Seminary.
  • In 1993-1898 studied at ENA,Leipzig,Berlin,Paris Universities.

Work activity

  • In 1885-1887 worked at the Gevorgian Seminary as a librarian and a teacher at school.
  • In 1887-1889 taught The Armenian language and Literature at Armenian Diocesan School of Karabakh.
  • In 1889-1893 taught The Armenian language and literature at Hovnanian school in Tbilisi.
  • In 1891-1892 was the temporary editor of the "New century" daily newspaper.
  • In 1898-1914 was a teacher of The Armenain language and Literature at the Gevorgian Seminary(audience section).
  • In 1914-1919 worked at Nersisian and Hovnanian schools in Tbilisi.
  • In 1920-1922 was the personal secretury of the Political commissariat in the main headquarters of Political commissariat.
  • In 1922 taught The Armenian language at Military school in Yerevan.
  • In 1923-1925 was the dean of the Faculty of History at Yerevan State University.
  • In 1925-1930 was the president of the council of Research and Art institute.
  • In 1933 was the president of the republican committee of verification and foundation of the place names in Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.

  • In 1898 became a Doctor of Philosophy Sciences.
  • In 1924 was a member of translation committee in Caucasian red army.
  • In 1925-1931 was a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Soviet Union in Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic and Transcaucasia.
  • In 1926 was a proffessor.
  • In 1930-1936 was a member of presidency inInstitute of Armenian Culture History,Institute of History and Literature.
  • In 1935 was a Doctor of Philology Sciences.
  • In 1939 was a member of committee for "Sasuntsi Davit"'s 1000 year celebration.
  • In 1940 received a certificate of Armenian Supreme Court.
  • In 1943 was an academician in Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.

  • Nearly all the fields of The Armenian language are in his 200 linguistic studies.They refer to spelling,phonetics,lexicology,morphology,proportion.He also wrote old armenian grammer,studied folk poems' language in Middle Armenian,formed vocabularies,etc.
  • He was engaged in old folklore.He collected,studied and published many folk poems.In 1886 rendered one of the volumes of "Sasuntsi Davit" and continued collecting,studying and publishing it.
  • He was interested in the history of armenian literature,especially in old and middle armenian literature.He wrote some studies about spiritual songs,Grigir Narekaci and other writers.
  • "History of Old Armenian Literature" two-volume study was published in Russian in Moscow.
  • In 1921 made a plan of Armenian othography by assignment of Լուսժողկոմ.
  • He was also engaged in publishing original versias of the scientific-historical works.
  • Carried out scientific publishing of "Daredevils of Sassoun" with Mekiq-Ohayevjanjayev's hard work
  • In 1908 created the classical theory of "Daredevils of Sassoun".
  • In 1910 was engaged in writing armenian proportion.
  • Institute of Literature in National Academy of sciences of the Republic of Armenia and № 3 school in Yerevan were named after him.
  • The bronze bust to Manuk Abeghyan is in the entrance hall of the central building of YSU.
