Biography

Was born about 900 in the village of Pas, Moxoene province (Greater Armenia).

Education

Work Activity

  • In 946 became the Catholicos of all Armenians.
  • In 948 moved the Catholicosate from Akhtamar to Argina.
  • In 961 crowned Ashot III Voghormats in Ani.
  • During his lifetime the monasteries Horomos (nearby Ani), Sanahin, Narekavank and many others were built.
  • Under his rule many churches were renovated and reestablished.

Other

  • At the beginning of Anania I Mokatsi's rule the relations between the Catholicos of all Armenians and the Churches of Syunik and Albania were sharply exacerbated .
  • He was able to prevent the attempt of separating the Albanian Catholicosate and the Syunik Bishopric from the Mother See.
  • During his lifetime a large-scale dogmatic movement evolved against the Bysantine Empire and the Chalcedonian Church.
  • In 954 condemned Khosrov bishop of Andzevatsik region, Vaspurakan province and convicted him on schismatic actions.
  • His church and nation-based activities have contributed to the survival of the ancient deposits of the Armenian Church, strengthening its positions, stabilizing the internal political situation in the country.
  • From his papers we have received only four ("Ararat", 1896-1897) which give us important information about the houses of Bagratuni, Artsruni and Syunik.
  • Was preceded by Yeghishe I Rshtuni.
  • Was followed by Vahan I Syunetsi.
