Biography
Was born on May 10, 1812 in Theodosia, Crimea in a poor Armenian family.
Education
- Studied at Armenian parish school of Theodosia.
- Studied at Armenian Catholic school of Gharasubazar.
- In 1826 left for Venice, studied at the Mekhitarist Congregation.
Work Activity
- Since 1830 worked as a general secretary at the Mekhitarist Congregation.
- In 1842-1848 taught at the Murat-Rafaelian college of Venice.
- In 1848-1856 was the director of the Suradian college of Paris.
- In 1843-1848 was the founder-editor of the first Armenian magazine "Bazmavep".
- In 1856-1865 was the editor-publisher of the "Masyats Aghavni" magazine of Theodosia.
- In 1858-1867 was the head of the diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Nor Nakhijevan and Basarabia.
- In 1858 established the Khalibian college of Theodosia.
- In 1874-1876 was supervisor of the Gevorkian Seminary.
- In 1876-1880 was the head of the diocese Vira-Hayots.
Achievements
- In 1971 became an Archbishop.
Other
- Is the brother of Aivazovsky Ivan.
- The works refer to history, philology, religion, theology. Is the author of textbooks as well.
- Spoke 12 languages, translated a number of works.
- Translated the works by Movses Khorenatsi(1841) and Agatangelos(1843) into Italian.
