Biography

Was born on January 12, 1912 in Pip village (Now Zəylik, in the Dashkasan rayon of Azerbaijan), Azerbaijan.

Education

  • In 1936 graduated from Yerevan Pedagogical Institute (extern).
  • In 1938 Moscow Historical and Philosophical Institute named after Chernyshevsky.
  • 1938-1941 studied at the post-graduate course at the Lomonosov Moscow University, Faculty of History.

Work activity

  • 1941-1948 worked as a lecturer at the Baku Pedagogical Institute and the Azerbaijan State University.
  • He has been a Senior scientific researcher and scientific secretary of the History Institute of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.
  • 1949-1952 and 1969-1973 was an editor of the ASSR Academy of Sciences social scientific "Bulletin" (Տեղեկագիր) (Since 1966,it's called "Lraber").
  • 1951-1954 was the head of the Department of Science and Culture at the Communist Party Central Committee.
  • 1954-1961 and 1977-1979 was the head of the department of new history in the History Institute of the Armenian SSR Academy of Sciences.
  • 1961-1968 was the director of the Armenian branch of the Institute of Marxism-Leninism (MLI) under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
  • 1963-1971 debuty of the Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR.
  • 1968-1977 academician-secretary of the Social Science Department of the Armenian SSR.
  • 1979-1982 head of the department of History CPSU (Communist Party of the Soviet Union) YSU.

  • He is the father of Pavel Aghayan.
  • Aghayan's works mainly refer to the revolutionary movements in Transcaucasia and Armenia, Armenian-Russian relations, establishment of Soviet Armenia.
  • The monograph of "The History of the Armenian People's Liberation Struggle"(Հայ ժողովրդի ազատագրական պայքարի պատմությունից) (1976) provides the history of the national liberation movement of the Armenian people from the 70s to the 1920s in the 19th century, separate chapters are dedicated to the history of the Armenian question after the Russian-Turkish war 1877-1878 , the rise of the national liberation struggle after the Berlin congress (1878); Armenian Genocide in 1915, to the events of Cilicia 1919-1921 , the activities of people's hero Andranik etc.
  • In the work "October and the Liberation of the Armenian people" (Հոկտեմբերը և հայ ժողովրդի ազատագրական պայքարը) (1982) among other issue the resistance of the Armenian people to the Turkish invaders 1918-1920 in the battles of Sardarapat, Bash Aparan, Gharakilisa , the significance of them, the relations of Soviet Russia and Armenia etc. are discussed.
  • Aghayan discussed the Armenian national liberation movement, Soviet-Armenian, Soviet-Turkish issues according to the ruling viewpoint in the Armenian Soviet historiography until the mid 1980s. Gave a negative assessment to the Treaty of Sevres in 1920. Ignored the significance of the Armenian statehood and the restoration of the Republic of Armenia in 1918 etc.
  • Participated in the creation of "The History of the Armenian people" academic work, a number of collective works and textbooks.
  • Participated in the works of the 12-16th International Congress of Historians, Balkanists and Bullists.
  • He is the author of more than 400 scientific articles and 40 monographs.
