Biography

Was born on October 10, 1926 in Makhachkala, Dagestan.

Education

  • In 1951 graduated from chorus-conducting department of Makhachkala Music College (was G.A. Gasanov's pupil).
  • In 1956 finished composition classes of Moscow Conservatory (A.N. Alexandrov's class).
  • Took postgraduate courses in Moscow Conservatory(under Y.A. Shaporin's leadership).

Work activity

  • During 1958-1959 wrote materials for "Dagestan truth" and "Komsomolec of Dagestan" newspapers.

  • In 1954 became a member of the first Dagestan Union of Composers.
  • In 1960, honored artist of Dagestan.

Other

  • Brother of Aghababov Arkadiy.
  • Was inspirated during folklore expeditions around Dagestan, which resulted in his vocal and symphonic suite "Dagestan songs" in six parts.
  • Pianist, educator and social activist Gotfrid Hasanov made a great impact on the formation of the young composer.
  • Died on October 23, 1959 in the airplane il-14, flight №200 Baku-Moscow.Because of the terrible weather the airplain, when attempting to land, fell into the forest, collapsed and burned down.Only one passenger survived in the crash, 5 crew members and 23 passengers including Sergey and his brother died.
  • His name is carved in gold letters on the marble stone in front of the Dagestan Composers Union building.
  • Many schools in Dagestan are named after him.
  • On December 2, 2010 in Makhachkala Buynaksk st. 51 building, where the composer was born and grown up, took place the opening of his memorial plaque.
