Biography
Was born on September 14, 1920 in the village of Horom, Shirak province, Republic of Armenia.
Education
- Received his primary education in Etchmiadzin and Leninakan.
- 1937-1941 studied at the Faculty of History of Yerevan State University.
- Did his postgraduate course at M.Abeghyan Institute of Literature.
Work activity
- Since 1940 senior research worker of Matenadaran.
- 1975-1976 delivered lectures about the history of Armenian literary translation at Yerevan State University.
Achievements
- In 1956 Doctor of Philological Sciences.
- Since 1985 member of Union of Soviet Writers.
Other
- In 1947 Gevorg Abgaryan was arrested, without trial was sentenced to 10 years in prison. On March 19, 1955 was justified and freed.
- His thesis was devoted to Malachia monastic and to the work "The History of the Nation of the Archers", the author of which he thought was Vardan Areveltsi. In 1946 he discovered the real author of "The History" Grigor Aknertsi, under whose name were published that work's (written in 13th century and referring to Mongol invasions) English, Turkish and Georgian translations. "The historian Zaccheus who lived in the 7th century" was in circulation in Armenological literature for a long time. Abgaryan proved that there did not exist such a historian in the 7th century.
- Several chapters of the Armenian translation of "The book of Airaki" of the Bible disappeared without a trace in the 12th century and were replaced with a new translation done in the same century. In 1966 in one of the manuscripts of Matenadaran Abgaryan found and published the chapters translated in the 5th century and considered as missing for centuries.
- Abgaryan's Doctoral candidate's dissertation was the monograph "The history of Sebeos and the mystery of anonym", for which he received the degree of Doctor of Philological Sciences.
- His studies were devoted to Medieval Armenian literature, graphology and the history of the book.
- Published the works of Faustus the Byzantine, Sebeos and Grigor Narekatsi.
- Compiled Russian collection "Armenian sources about Abkhazia and the Abkhazians".
- Translated from German to Armenian Josef Markwart's, Hans Walter Paul's, Linos Benakis' studies referring to Armenology. His book "Matenadaran" was published in Russian, English (Yerevan, 1962) and Polish (Warsaw, 1965).
- Abgaryan devoted separate articles to many writers and poets: Khorenatsi, Narekatsi, Lambronatsi, Tlkurantsi, Karapet Vipogh, Abovyan, Raffi, Isahakyan, Varoujan, Werfel, Khechumyan and others. He supported in the Estonian translation of "David of Sasun".He also wrote articles devoted to the European and American armenologists and the history of Armenology.
